Kendrick Lamar’s “Untitled Unmastered” Debuts At #1 On Billboard 200
Kendrick Lamar’s surprise release, “Untitled Unmastered,” scored him his second No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The album consisted of demos from “To Pimp A Butterfly.” Despite the album being a surprise release, Lamar managed to sell 142,000 in his first week.
The move (Surprise-styled release) is risky, though it also allows the artist to see how alert their audience is. This seems to be the route that some artists are taking today when releasing an album. The route has its pros and cons. One con is that fans know ahead of time when an artist is releasing an album, that way they’re aware and able to save their money prior to the release. However, some artists are able to pull off a surprise-styled release with no problem. Congrats to Kendrick, as I think his sales performance was decent. Also, the album was only available on digital retailers. The album was sent to physical retailers just recently, which means Kendrick could expect good numbers on his follow-up week as well.
