Interview: Sy Ari Da Kid Talks “The Shadow In The Shade,” Being An Independent Artist & More

Sy Ari Da Kid spoke with Flavor In The Street about his new project, “The Shadow In The Shade,” parting ways with Cash Money Records, and being an independent artist.

Thank you for taking the time to chat with me about your new album. What was the inspiration behind the album title, “The Shadow In The Shade?”

For the longest time in this music industry, I was always looked at as the underground artist that should be mainstream with the best that have all the spotlight at the top. But always was respected and known for the talent, even though I never wanted to deal with the industry bullshit and still don’t. I used the shadow in the shade as a metaphor for the thing you know is there but has always been kept in the shade. Knowing if it got the same spot light as others the whole world would see it.

You collaborated with some incredible lyricists on this project, such as Jadakiss and Cyhi The Prynce. Who else would you love to work with?

Jay-Z & DJ Premier

How did it feel getting Raekwon on the “A Dream, A Plan (Remix)?”

That was groundbreaking for me because as a kid growing up a true Wu-Tang fan, I needed it to happen. Just for me and my soul musically. Getting that done meant a lot, especially the way my older brother used to listen to them.

What is your relationship like with Birdman now (If one exists)?

Me & Birdman still chop it up from time to time. It was all business when I left Cash Money. Nothing personal. I still appreciate everything he did for me in that time. I’ll never forget it.

Was having to fund your tour a breaking point for you at Cash Money Records? If not, what was?

It wasn't just that. There were things between me and Cash Money that I just wasn’t comfortable with businesswise. Then once I was told no to having some of my budget released to me, as a boss that was just unacceptable. I'm not waiting for anybody. I don't care about this industry shit. I'm going to do what I want and keep my foot on the gas. Time doesn't wait on no man so why should I? If somebody can't respect that then I'm gone. I’ll do it myself, my way!

Could you see yourself signing to a label again? Why or why not?

No label can ever sign me again, ever! I don't care how much money they offer me. I ain’t for sale.

What would you say is the biggest misconception towards independent artists versus signed artists?

I'm not really sure. I just know being independent is better, especially creativity wise and having a peace of mind consistently.

In 2017, you and Dontell Antonio raised over $250K to combat sex-trafficking and drug-related issues. Have you made anymore philanthropic efforts or even considered launching your own charity program?

Not really, but I do a lot of things behind the scenes for the youth and helping the homeless. I'm just not one to document it or put it all on camera. Some things should just be done from the heart.

How do you balance being an independent artist and single father? What words of encouragement can you offer to other single fathers?

I don't really think of it as balance. I just wake up and put my kids first and once I know their day or week is set, I plan and work around that as hard as I can. It's that simple for me. Trying to do both mentally at the same time just doesn't work for me. They must come first every time.

Thank you again for taking the time to speak with me. Before you go, what else can fans expect from Sy Ari Da Kid? Any touring?

Appreciate you as well. Just stay tuned! I’ll be dropping more music than every single artist in the entire world, as usual. That will never change.
